Air Berlin Acquires German Airline LTU

Germany's Air Berlin PLC said Tuesday it bought Duesseldorf-based airline LTU for euro140 million in cash to expand the business.
In addition Air Berlin will assume between euro190 million and euro200 million of LTU's debt.
"Through this transaction, the Air Berlin group will become the largest airline in the most important German source market," the company said.

LTU will remain a legally independent company within the Air Berlin group, with its own management, and will retain its own name "in the foreseeable future," Air Berlin said. The acquisition makes Air Berlin the fourth largest airline for European traffic behind Ryanair, Air France/KLM and Lufthansa, the company said.
Separately, Air Berlin it agreed to buy a 49 percent stake in Switzerland's Belair Airlines AG, a unit of the Hotelplan group. Financial details were not disclosed.
"Air Berlin aims to increase its activities in the Swiss market," the company said.
Both the LTU and Belair deals are subject to regulatory approval.

Brussels Airlines set for take off

Brussels Airlines will take to the skies this Sunday, completing the merger of Virgin Express and SN Brussels Airlines. The new carrier is promising to combine the business class services of SN Brussels with the low-cost operations of Virgin Express, as it launches flights to more than 50 European destinations.

UK airports will see see a fair proportion of the flights as routes to Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Gatwick, Heathrow and Newcastle feature on the network map of Brussels Airlines.
There will be two standards of service available. The top service, "b.flex" has been developed for business travellers and will focus on offering swift progress through airports and separate fast-track security control at busier times of the day.
For regular travellers, "b.light" is the low fare offer. One-way tickets in this class start at €49.99 (£34), including taxes.
The airline will also offer links to destinations further afield with flights to the US and Canada, the Middle East and Africa. Brussels Airlines announced earlier this month that it will begin the only direct service between Burundi and Europe.

Agreement on "open skies" finally reached

A new agreement which promises "open skies" between Europe and the United States has been signed. This should mean more competition on flights across the Atlantic.

After years of discussion a deal has been struck by the European Union's Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot and his US counterpart Mary Peters, that allows any EU-based airline to fly from any city within the EU to any city in the US, and vice versa.

Jacques Barrot said: "We have an opportunity to unlock major benefits on both sides of the Atlantic. In economic terms, this unprecedented agreement would represent a step change - it could be worth up to €12 billion in economic benefits and up to 80,000 new jobs."

But under pressure from the UK government the plans won't actually be introduced until March 2008 as questions were raised about American regulations which restrict non-US airlines from operating domestic routes in America, for example, blocking a US-based but European owned airline from offering services between New York and Los Angeles.

Thursday, March 22

GB Airways’ Kevin Hatton said: “Gibraltar is at the very heart of the airline and we are very pleased developing Gibraltar’s air services. Our partnership with Iberia is key to the development and the schedule opens up the possibility of short business trips to the Rock and the surrounding region. ”
One-way fares will start at £32 plus taxes from Gibraltar, €48 plus taxes from Madrid.

Ryanair is getting ready for "the mother of all giveaways" this week, with a free Italian holiday up for grabs.

flyglobespan cancels flights before they start

A new summer flight to the Costa Blanca by low-cost airline flyglobespan has been cancelled before its first take-off.
The airline announced in October it would be starting flights to Murcia from Aberdeen on Sundays and Wednesdays from April 29.
But it removed the Wednesday flights from its website without warning on Wednesday and confirmed to callers they would not be going ahead "for technical reasons".
A spokesman at Aberdeen Airport said they had not yet been told officially the flights had been cancelled.
Last night, flyglobespan confirmed it was a lack of passengers which had prompted the decision which has left some travellers furious.

Ryanair to fly to major airports... and the free flights

The new strategy

Low-cost airline Ryanair is to begin flying to major airports, signalling a new chapter in the development of no-frills flying.
Carriers such as Ryanair and easyJet have traditionally adopted a low-cost model whereby they fly to and from secondary airports such as London Stansted, where airport charges are lower.Other such airports include Glasgow Prestwick, Frankfurt Hahn and Barcelona Girona - the latter being in fact around 145 kilometres from Barcelona. Passengers are advised to always double-check the location of their destination airport to avoid any shocks.

...and the free flights
Ryanair says it will give away 100,000 free flights for every Irish winner at this year’s Cheltenham Festival.
The flights will be one-way, and the ‘free’ offer excludes taxes and charges.
Head of communications Peter Sherrard said: "As a big thank you to the 25,000 passengers who have chosen Ryanair to fly to and from this year’s festival, we will give away 100,000 free flights for every Irish winner and double that number if last year’s record of 10 Irish winners is beaten."

Bologna is just one flight away for the Maltese traveller. Low-cost Italian airline Meridiana will start operating flights twice a week from the last week in March until September.

Good bye Air Scotland

Air Scotland, the low-cost airline based in Scotland, ceased operating during February. Oddly for a low-cost airline, they appear to have disappeared without trace and there was no formal announcement that they would cease operations. We have been unable to find any information about what should happen to passengers who have booked tickets.

The airline, registered in Greece, was previously licensed by the Greek Civil Aviation Authority. It is believed that they have had their operating license suspended, and therefore, cannot continue flying.

"The End" for Fly Me

Swedish budget airline FlyMe has ceased operations, grounding all its jets and leaving passengers stranded at airports around Europe.

In a statement, the airline's board of directors said they had failed to raise enough money to ensure the continued operation of flights which resulted in them filing for bankruptcy.
Danish airline Sterling.dk is offering passengers flying on international routes the option of a discount on a replacement ticket, while those people stranded overseas will be offered a free ticket home where seats are available.
FlyMe started operations in 2004 and offered flights to about a dozen European destinations, including a service between Stansted and Gothenburg.

What's new with Europe's top low-fare carriers?

The demand is such that more than 45 carriers have sprouted up to serve Europe. With the peak summer travel season just around the corner, now's a good time for a refresher on Europe's most popular low-fare carriers, and a look at what's new with each."

This is a part of a very interesting arcticle that explains all the low cost situation in Europe. Read it Here
